Donkey Kong is Nintendo’s 1981 arcade game, in which Jumpman, the future Mario, leaps over barrels thrown by the gorilla to reach Lady. This LEGO Super Mario set recreates the cabinet, with a barrel lever, a joystick and a jump button. Our take: it’s one of LEGO’s most playable arcade sets, because the 21 barrels run in a loop thanks to a fully mechanical mechanism, with no motor, app or sound.
Set 72051 packs 1,367 pieces to build an arcade cabinet over 39 cm tall, 27 cm wide and 15 cm deep. It recreates one level of the game with Jumpman, Donkey Kong and Lady, the scaffold, the ladder and hammers. Pull the lever to release one barrel at a time, as if thrown by Donkey Kong, then move Jumpman with the joystick and make him jump with the button. A mechanism circulates the barrels in a loop. Donkey Kong and Lady are stickers, while Jumpman is printed. Released on August 1, 2026 at €169.99, it was developed with LEGO designer Carl Merriam.
The first is the retro-gaming fan: the blue cabinet and the scaffold scene recall the original game, with its hammers and ladders. The second is the Nintendo and Super Mario fan, since Jumpman is the first Mario. The third is the LEGO arcade collector, who finds a counterpart to PAC-MAN with real interaction. It suits less anyone expecting a full game with a score: the set remains a mechanism to handle, with no motor or screen, and the barrels can’t truly hit Jumpman.
Know this before you buy: the game is mechanical, with no score, no sound and no motor, and the barrels run on a separate track behind Jumpman, so you can’t really lose. The joystick moves Jumpman left and right, and the button makes him jump. Donkey Kong and Lady are stickers, which takes a little care to apply. The set is in production and available new. The model is 39 cm tall, 27 cm wide and 15 cm deep, a desk or shelf size. It belongs to LEGO Super Mario, not the Icons line.
